Today we honor Lorenzo Da Ponte, the Italian poet, librettist, educator, and cultural bridge whose work connected Europe’s great musical tradition with the growing cultural life of America.

Born in Italy in 1749, Da Ponte became one of the most important librettists in the history of opera. He is best remembered for his collaboration with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, writing the libretti for The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte.

Later in life, Da Ponte came to the United States, where he helped introduce Italian language, literature, and opera to American audiences. He taught at Columbia College and worked to build appreciation for Italian culture in New York.

His life was one of creativity, reinvention, and cultural exchange. Through words, music, teaching, and perseverance, Da Ponte helped carry the artistic spirit of Italy into America’s developing cultural identity.

As America celebrates its 250th Anniversary, we proudly recognize Giuseppe Verdi for the timeless gift of music, the enduring spirit of Italian culture, and the universal language of artistic excellence.
