Pietro Perugino

Pietro Perugino, born Pietro Vannucci around 1448 in Città della Pieve, became one of the most admired painters of Renaissance Italy. His work is celebrated for its calm harmony, clear composition, luminous color, graceful figures, and serene sense of space.

Perugino’s religious paintings joined spiritual devotion with carefully ordered perspective and peaceful landscapes. His celebrated fresco The Delivery of the Keys in the Sistine Chapel demonstrates his mastery of architecture, symmetry, human gesture, and deep spatial organization. His Madonnas and altarpieces brought the same balance and gentleness to sacred subjects.

Perugino maintained an influential workshop in Perugia and Florence and became one of the important teachers of the next Renaissance generation. His most famous pupil was Raphael, who carried Perugino’s ideals of balance, clarity, graceful composition, and harmonious space into the High Renaissance.
