Benvenuto Cellini, born in Florence in 1500, became one of the most brilliant and colourful artists of the Italian Renaissance. Trained as a goldsmith, he gained fame for jewellery, medals, sculpture, and decorative works that united technical precision with dramatic imagination.
His celebrated bronze Perseus with the Head of Medusa remains a landmark of Florentine sculpture, while the Cellini Salt Cellar reveals his extraordinary skill in gold and enamel. Cellini also served powerful patrons in Italy and France.
His lively autobiography preserved a vivid account of his ambition, conflicts, adventures, and artistic triumphs. Cellini died in 1571, leaving a legacy of craftsmanship, individuality, and creative daring that continues to define the spirit of the Renaissance.
