July 31 • Amadeo Giannini
Banker, Visionary, and Champion of Everyday People
Amadeo Giannini was born in San Jose, California, in 1870 to Italian immigrant parents and became one of the most influential bankers in American history. He believed banking should serve ordinary people, not only the wealthy.
In 1904, Giannini founded the Bank of Italy in San Francisco to provide credit to immigrants, workers, farmers, and small business owners who were often ignored by traditional banks. His vision was simple but powerful: opportunity should be available to people with dreams, determination, and character.
After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, Giannini famously helped rebuild the city by lending money when many banks remained closed. His confidence in everyday people helped families restart businesses, rebuild homes, and restore communities.
The Bank of Italy eventually became part of Bank of America, growing from a neighborhood institution into one of the world’s largest financial organizations. Today, Amadeo Giannini is remembered as a visionary who helped expand the American dream by opening doors for people others overlooked.
