Joe DiMaggio

Joe DiMaggio was born Giuseppe Paolo DiMaggio in Martinez, California, in 1914, the son of Sicilian immigrants. Raised in San Francisco, he developed into one of the most celebrated baseball players of the twentieth century.

Joining the New York Yankees in 1936, DiMaggio quickly became known for his graceful play, powerful hitting and remarkable consistency. His most famous achievement came in 1941, when he recorded a hit in 56 consecutive games — a Major League Baseball record that remains one of the sport’s most enduring accomplishments.

DiMaggio helped the Yankees win nine World Series championships during his career and was named the American League’s Most Valuable Player three times. His quiet confidence, discipline and unmistakable style made him an American sports icon while his family’s immigrant story became part of the larger Italian-American experience.
