Filippo Mazzei was born in Poggio a Caiano, near Florence, Italy, in 1730. A physician, merchant, writer, and political thinker, Mazzei became an influential voice for liberty and individual rights during the birth of the United States.
After arriving in Virginia in 1773, Mazzei developed friendships with many of America’s founders, including Thomas Jefferson. His writings about freedom, equality, and the natural rights of people helped shape the ideals that guided the American Revolution.
Mazzei believed that governments existed to protect the rights of citizens and that liberty belonged to all people. His ideas traveled across nations and inspired generations seeking freedom and justice.
