Giuseppe Ungaretti, born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1888 to Italian parents, became one of the defining voices of modern Italian poetry. His writing stripped poetry to its essentials, using spare language, silence, and vivid imagery to explore memory, mortality, and the human spirit.
