Marco Polo

Marco Polo, born in Venice in 1254, became one of history’s most famous travelers. The son of a merchant family, he journeyed far beyond the Mediterranean world and traveled across Asia along routes that later became legendary as part of the Silk Road.

Accompanied by his father and uncle, Marco Polo eventually reached the court of Kublai Khan, where he spent many years in service and observation. His travels exposed him to distant cities, new peoples, vast trade networks, and civilizations that were little known to most Europeans of his time.

After returning to Venice, Marco Polo’s experiences were recorded in The Travels of Marco Polo, a work that widened Europe’s understanding of Asia and inspired later generations of merchants, mapmakers, and explorers. His legacy endures as a symbol of curiosity, endurance, and the human desire to cross horizons and understand the wider world.
