Torquato Tasso, born in Sorrento in 1544, became one of the greatest poets of the Italian Renaissance. His work joined classical literary tradition with Christian faith, romance, heroism, emotion, and a remarkable understanding of the conflicts within the human spirit.
His masterpiece, Gerusalemme Liberata—or Jerusalem Delivered—tells an epic story centered on the First Crusade. Tasso filled the poem with heroic battles, spiritual conflict, love, loyalty, temptation, sacrifice, and memorable characters, creating a work that reached far beyond the traditional boundaries of heroic poetry.
Tasso’s own life was marked by extraordinary achievement as well as periods of personal turmoil and confinement. Yet his poetry continued to circulate throughout Europe, inspiring writers, composers, painters, and thinkers for generations. His influence helped carry the Italian epic tradition from the Renaissance into the cultural world that followed.
