Lorenzo Ghiberti

Lorenzo Ghiberti, born in Florence in 1378, became one of the great sculptors and metalworkers of the early Italian Renaissance. His career was transformed in 1401 when he won the celebrated competition to create a new set of bronze doors for the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence.

Ghiberti’s first Baptistery doors combined Gothic elegance with increasingly natural human figures, architectural depth, and classical influence. His second set of doors advanced these ideas even further. Their ten monumental gilded-bronze panels used perspective, landscape, architecture, and layered relief to create scenes of remarkable depth and narrative complexity.

These eastern doors later became famous as the Gates of Paradise. Ghiberti also created important monumental sculptures and directed a highly influential Florentine workshop. His combination of technical mastery and visual storytelling helped establish bronze relief as one of the great artistic languages of Renaissance Italy.
