August 8 • Pope Gregory the Great
Pope Gregory the Great, born in Rome around 540, guided the city through war, plague, hunger, and political uncertainty. Elected pope in 590, he strengthened Church administration while organising relief for the poor and defending Rome’s people during a period of profound instability.
His influential Pastoral Rule defined leadership as service, humility, and moral responsibility. Gregory also sent Augustine of Canterbury and other missionaries to England, beginning a mission that reshaped Christianity in the British Isles.
A gifted writer and reformer, Gregory became closely associated with the sacred music tradition later called Gregorian chant. His diplomacy, scholarship, and pastoral vision helped establish the structure and spirit of the medieval papacy.
