November 2 • Luchino Visconti
On November 2nd, we honor Luchino Visconti.
Born in Milan on November 2, 1906, into privilege, the Italian filmmaker turned his camera toward ordinary people—and helped change the language of cinema. Visconti grew up surrounded by music, theatre, and art.
His 1943 film, Ossessione, helped establish Italian neorealism, bringing the struggles and emotions of everyday life to the screen.
In The Leopard, he portrayed an aristocratic family facing the transformation of Italy. The film won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1963.
His artistry also enriched theatre and opera, while films such as Death in Venice explored beauty, longing, and the passage of time.
Today, Luchino Visconti reminds us that great storytelling can preserve a changing world—and reveal the humanity within it.
