Giuseppe Garibaldi, born in Nice in 1807, became one of the central figures in the unification of Italy. A sailor, soldier, and revolutionary, he fought for liberty in South America before returning to serve the Italian cause.
In 1860, Garibaldi led the Expedition of the Thousand, a daring volunteer campaign that liberated Sicily and Naples. His victories helped make the creation of a united Italian kingdom possible.
Although admired as a national hero, Garibaldi placed unity above personal power and transferred his conquests to King Victor Emmanuel II. He died in 1882, remembered as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and devotion to Italy.
