Heritage Minute
This year the United States celebrates the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This historic milestone provides an opportunity to reflect upon the people, ideas, sacrifices, and contributions that helped shape the Nation during its first two and one-half centuries.
The Italian-American experience is woven throughout the story of America. Generations of Italian immigrants and their descendants contributed to the growth of communities, industries, education, science, medicine, engineering, business, government, military service, arts, music, and culture throughout the United States.
From explorers and inventors to educators, artists, scientists, entrepreneurs, public servants, and community leaders, individuals of Italian heritage have left an enduring legacy that continues to benefit future generations.
Heritage Minute 250 recognizes these contributions while celebrating the values of opportunity, freedom, innovation, perseverance, family, education, and civic responsibility that helped build the Nation.
For 250 years, Americans from every background have contributed to a continuing story of innovation, opportunity, service, education, community, and freedom. The Italian-American experience is one chapter of that larger story and remains an important part of our Nation’s continuing journey.
Today we honor the individuals and families who crossed oceans, built communities, served their country, advanced science and education, created works of art, strengthened local economies, and passed their traditions and values to future generations.
As we celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary, we also celebrate the enduring contributions of Italian heritage to the American experience.
